Here are some things you must do to be #1 on the search engines:
The search engines all have their own algorithms to determine which site relates best to each phrase or keyword. Firstly, they look for the keyword in the title, description and domain name (www.) of the web page. For example if your website had the title Atlanta Plumbers and your domain was www.AtlantaPlumbers.com and when people searched it, the description said “ We are Atlanta Plumbers specialising in quality and professional work. Toilet plumbing, bathroom plumbing, kitchen plumbing, new house plumbing.”
If a webpage has all 3 of these criteria – title, domain and description, then the search engines will reward it, but not necessarily rank it highly.
The second thing that the search engines look at is the content on your website. The content relating to your keyword must be original and of good quality. Using the above example, if the content was about buying real estate in Atlanta, the search engines would probably rank you quite low for the keyword of Atlanta Plumbers. The third and most important aspect the search engines generally look at is the number of other webpages linking or pointing back to your website. These are known as “backlinks”. The more relevant backlinks pointing to your site, the more the search engines see your site as an authority for that keyword and will reward you by placing you higher on its page. Google has a system called “PageRank Technology” whereby pages that Google sees as important are given a higher PageRank (PR) and are more likely to (but not always) appear at the top of the search results.
